General Orthodontic Questions
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment uses appliances like braces and clear aligners to move teeth into their proper positions, improving your bite, your oral health, and the appearance of your smile.
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists. After dental school, orthodontists complete an additional two to three years of specialized residency training focused exclusively on tooth movement, bite correction, and facial development. Dr. Shakourian completed her advanced orthodontic training at the University of Detroit Mercy, giving her the expertise to treat a wide range of alignment and bite issues.
At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, Dr. Shakourian can assess how your child’s teeth and jaws are developing and identify any issues that may benefit from early intervention. An early visit does not necessarily mean your child will need treatment right away — in many cases, we simply monitor their growth.
Is it too late for adults to get orthodontic treatment?
Absolutely not. Teeth can be moved at any age, as long as the teeth and supporting structures are healthy. We treat adults of all ages at Lucent Orthodontics, and many of our adult patients tell us they wish they had started sooner.
Do I need a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist?
No. You can schedule a free consultation directly with Lucent Orthodontics without a referral. Many patients are referred by their general dentist, but it is not required.
Treatment Options
What types of braces and treatments do you offer?
We offer traditional metal braces, ceramic (tooth-colored) braces, clear aligner therapy, early and interceptive orthodontic treatment for children, and comprehensive treatment for teens and adults. Dr. Shakourian will recommend the best option for your specific needs during your free consultation.
What is the difference between metal braces and ceramic braces?
Metal braces use stainless steel brackets, while ceramic braces use tooth-colored or translucent brackets that blend with your natural teeth. Both deliver the same clinical results, but ceramic braces are less visible, making them a popular choice for patients who prefer a more discreet appearance.
How do clear aligners work?
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that gradually shift your teeth into alignment. You wear each set of aligners for about one to two weeks before moving to the next set. Aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours per day for best results and are removed for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene.
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
Clear aligners are highly effective for mild to moderately complex orthodontic cases, including crowding, spacing, and certain bite issues. For more severe or complex cases, traditional braces may be more efficient. Dr. Shakourian will give you an honest recommendation based on your evaluation.
Can my teen get clear aligners instead of braces?
Many teens are excellent candidates for clear aligners. Teen aligner systems often include compliance indicators to help track wear time. Dr. Shakourian will evaluate your teen and discuss whether aligners or braces are the better option for their specific needs.
What is Phase 1 or early orthodontic treatment?
Phase 1 treatment is a focused period of orthodontic care for children typically between ages 6 and 10 who have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. The goal is to address developing issues such as crossbites, crowding, jaw growth problems, or protruding teeth before they become more complex. Phase 1 usually lasts 6 to 12 months.
The Treatment Experience
Does getting braces hurt?
Having braces placed is not painful. You may experience some mild soreness or pressure for a few days after placement and after adjustment appointments. This is normal and typically resolves on its own. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help during this period.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the type of treatment and the complexity of your case. Most patients with braces complete treatment in 12 to 24 months. Clear aligner cases can range from 6 to 18 months. Dr. Shakourian will provide a personalized timeline during your consultation.
How often will I need to come in for appointments?
Patients with braces typically come in every four to eight weeks for adjustments. Clear aligner patients may have slightly less frequent check-ins. Most appointments are quick, usually 20 to 30 minutes.
What foods should I avoid with braces?
You should avoid hard foods like ice, nuts, and hard candy; sticky foods like caramel, gum, and taffy; chewy foods like bagels and licorice; and crunchy snacks like popcorn and chips. We will provide a complete dietary guide when your braces are placed.
Can I play sports with braces?
Yes. We recommend wearing an orthodontic mouthguard during contact sports and physical activities to protect your braces, teeth, and mouth from impact.
Can I still play musical instruments with braces?
Yes. There may be a brief adjustment period as you get used to playing with braces, particularly for wind and brass instruments, but most patients adapt quickly. Orthodontic wax can help with any initial lip irritation.
What do I do if a bracket breaks or a wire comes loose?
Call our office to schedule a repair appointment. In the meantime, use orthodontic wax to cover any poking wire or sharp bracket edge. If a bracket is loose but still on the wire, leave it in place. If a piece comes off completely, save it and bring it to your appointment.
Will I need a retainer after treatment?
Yes. After your braces are removed or you finish your clear aligner series, you will wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back toward their original positions. Dr. Shakourian will explain your retainer options and provide a wear schedule tailored to your needs.
